27 March - 5 April

Second humble Contact Improvisation Gathering to take place in the southernmost tip of Honshu, Japan.

日本語はこちらから
This event is part of the
Living Somatic project :
Japan experimental dance residency in nature and studio, a dance residency project initiated with the hope that while restoring an old folk house in a depopulated rural area of Japan, people would gather, engage with culture, discover dance, and that this would contribute to regional revitalization.
Humility
is a characteristic of the Japanese people and a symbol of Japanese culture.

We hope that this gathering will be an opportunity for you to gain new inspiration, discover yourself through the people you will encounter during your visit to Japan.
Intersection of cultures
The port of Yamagawa in this small city is where diplomacy began in the 16th century with the arrival of the first Portuguese ship to the Japanese mainland.

The Gathering was inspired by these local characteristics and named on 'INTERSECTION', meaning the point of equal convergence where Japan and the world, our bodies and our lives intersect.
Dance venue
We will utilize four distinct experimental site.
  • Nanohanakan
The central hall of Nanohana-kan, with its spherical shape and radiating light. Built in 1998 by Kagoshima-born local architect Masaharu Takasaki. Due to the region's population decline and complex design, it is currently scarcely used.
  • Civic Hall
The Civic Hall is a new building built in 2022. The stage of the big hall is our dance space. In case you are wondering, the flooring material is bamboo with a pleasant light feeling!
  • Dojo
The Dojo is currently used Japanese origined martial arts such as Judo, Kendo, Karatedo, Aikido by local kids, Tatami mats are perfect for our falling and rolling practice.
  • Lake Ikeda
The open stage at Lake Ikeda has a café next to it and is our performance space.

Together we explore

What does "touching" truly mean to us?
What does "moving" signify?
What is Contact Improvisation like for Japanese people?
Is it different from Contact Improvisation practiced in other Asian countries, Europe, America, and around the world?
What kind of people practice CI?
How does everyone engage with CI?
What do we take away from practicing CI?
Ibusuki City, Kagoshima

This is the second CI Gathering to take place in Ibusuki City, Kagoshima Prefecture, the southernmost tip of Honshu, Japan.

The port of Yamakawa in this small city is where diplomacy began in the 16th century with the arrival of the first Portuguese ship to the Japanese mainland. Jorge Alvarez, the captain of that ship, wrote a 'Report on Japan' of what he saw and was the first to introduce Japan to the Western world.

Ibusuki is known as a retro hot spring resort and is blessed with an abundance of hot springs. It is said that there are more than 800 sources in the town, some of which are luxurious private spas, while others encompass long-established family run business that have been around since the Meiji era.(For about 150 years)

Nanohanakan is our base venue has plenty of space both indoors and outdoors,

and surrounding area is relatively well maintained and has cafes that serve food,

making it easy for those unfamiliar with this kind of event to attend.
